With the heating running through winter, timber in older homes can dry out and shrink, leaving gaps around skirting boards, door frames and window surrounds. Sealing those gaps in spring makes a real difference to draughts and heat retention. We cover bespoke carpentry and repairs locally.

We fitted a run of built-in wardrobes last month — floor to ceiling, painted to match the existing woodwork, with soft-close doors throughout. The brief was to make them look like they’d always been there. ✅ That’s the kind of project we enjoy most — functional storage that doesn’t compromise the room.

Doors that stick in summer and rattle in winter are almost always a timber movement issue rather than a structural problem. A couple of millimetres planed from the right edge usually sorts it permanently. If you’ve been living with a door that doesn’t close properly, it’s a straightforward fix — usually under an hour.

External timber — gates, fences, window frames and doors — benefits from a fresh coat of stain or preservative every two to three years. Left untreated, moisture gets into the grain and causes swelling, splits and eventually rot that requires full replacement. Maintenance is always cheaper than replacement.
